There are 3 primary perspectives that coaches may have for understanding clients. A client is usually focused on one of the lenses below and most coaches can help change the lens to create improvement. It is helpful to ask yourself, “What is missing?” – clients often focus on one of the following types of goals.

Three (3) Primary Types of Goals

External Goals – these are often measured by time, money, material possessions, marital status. The objective is to figure out, achieve, improve, fix defects. Very often coaches are dealing with cause and effect. Some examples of this would be career shifts, weight loss, financial goals…close coordination is often needed. For this, we work with clients to focus on sequence of needed steps, how to get them done, accountability, logistics, meaning and results broken down into doable actions and often working backwards by reverse engineering the problem.

Internal Goals – this seeks to access a client’s experience, emotions, meanings, memories, patterns. Coach and client objectives are wanting to know how to feel, enjoy, experience,      and create meanings and experience. Some examples of how these manifests are that the client feels lost, depressed, frustrated, disappointed, but wants to feel joy, desire, fulfillment, excitement. We would focus on a compelling future, reframe of meaning, goals & desires, and needs.

Relational Goals– this relates to how the client communicates, relates, feels, and experiences relationships with other people. Our objectives would include accessing how they communicate, understand, and enjoy others in the moment, plan the future, and what meaning they create from the past. Some examples could include conflicts between parents & children, couples, business colleagues, friends, family members and desire to have more closeness, passion, collaboration within different relationships. We would focus on meaning, purpose, planning, communication, roles, agreements, needs, rules, patterns, triggers, and experiences/actions. Specifically, we would also seek to understand the past while focusing on helping the client move forward into the present.
